Hover Wyvern: the defensive blade that beats attackers

By Alberto ·

Hover Wyvern proves that in competitive Beyblade X, pure defense still has a place at the top table. Naming quirks aside (the official Takara Tomy name is “Wyvern Hover” (ワイバーンホバー), the two words swapped compared to the Hasbro name “Hover Wyvern” that most Western players know it by), the part also has an unusual origin: it debuted in the Hasbro set G0842, not in a Takara Tomy set, a rare case of a part introduced in the West first, before appearing in UX-00 and UX-21.

The stats speak for themselves: attack 13, defense 60, stamina 27 out of 100. It is an almost one-dimensional profile, entirely focused on absorbing hits. Across the 1,746 tournament placements collected, with 562 wins spread over 188 distinct combos, Hover Wyvern is the third most-used blade in the game, behind only Shark Scale (4,193 placements) and Wizard Rod (3,188). But it is the only one of the top three that is a pure defense blade: the other two in the top 3 are an attacker and a stamina/endurance blade. That makes it a special case in the current meta: defense that not only keeps pace, but does so on its own in a field dominated by other approaches.

The 9-60 Kick build and recent results

The reference build is Hover Wyvern 9-60 Kick, score 8.55, combo #7 of the entire all-time WBO ranking with 355 WBO points and 185 wins according to that ranking. The adoption numbers are just as solid: 451 tournament events, 173 wins, 551 top cut appearances, 2.2% meta share. The community ranks it at the top: the PXD tier list puts it in tier X, the highest grade, as a defender.

Recent results confirm this is not just historical data. At the Bi-Weekly BBX Tournament #3 - Beybladin’ X Spokane on September 1, 2026 (30 players), the combo finished 1st and 2nd at the same event. At the Dallas Beyblade Association - Beycon 26 Dallas Regionals on September 19, 2026 (31 players), it came in 3rd. Two different events, two different weekends, the same combo in the top 3 both times: not an isolated hit, but a steady presence at the top.

How it wins: the Kick bit, and what it has to stop

The Kick bit is the choice that completes the profile. On its own, 60 defense would be enough to absorb hits but would leave the blade stationary, exposed to being surrounded, the typical risk of every static defender. Kick gives balanced movement: the blade moves enough to avoid getting circled, while the high defense does the heavy lifting of cushioning the impact. It is the combination, not the stat alone, that makes the plan work.

What Hover Wyvern has to stop, by definition of its role, is Shark Scale: the most-used attack blade in the game, mounted on the Shark Scale 1-70 Low Rush build, score 8.93, combo #2 of the entire all-time WBO ranking. A defender exists precisely to absorb this kind of pressure (direct, repeated, high-power hits), and the combination of 60 defense plus Kick mobility is designed to resist an attacker that aims to close out the match in a few launches.

Style comparison with Wizard Rod

The sharpest contrast in the current meta is with Wizard Rod, in the Wizard Rod 1-60 Hexa build, score 9.62 and the first combo of the entire all-time WBO ranking. The two blades share the status of “top 3 by usage” but get there from opposite directions.

Wizard Rod survives through stamina and endurance: the plan is to stay in play longer than the opponent, grinding through launches until the score decides the outcome. Hover Wyvern survives by absorbing hits: the plan is to withstand the direct impact, not to stretch out the match. They are two different survival philosophies applied to the same problem (not losing), and the fact that both consistently appear at the top of the placements says that the current meta rewards more than one way of staying on your feet. With 60 defense and only 27 stamina, Hover Wyvern has no alternative to the first approach: if the hit gets through, it does not have the endurance to recover by outlasting. It has to stop it right there, or not stop it at all.

Tournament record
