Random Booster Vol. 9 (BX-48): worth the gamble for Cobalt Dragoon?

By Alberto ·

What happens if you open a random booster and don’t like what you get? That is the central risk of Takara Tomy’s Random Booster Vol. 9, released on February 14, 2026: the box is sealed and contains one of the 5 possible blades in the line, decided at random at production time. You don’t choose, you don’t know, you open it and see.

The 5 blades in play are:

  • Cobalt Dragoon, ratchet 9-80, bit F
  • Shark Edge, ratchet 4-70, bit E — careful: it is NOT the same blade as “Shark Scale”, a similar name but a different part
  • Mammoth Tusk, ratchet 7-60, bit S
  • Hells Scythe, ratchet 3-85, bit GB
  • Dran Buster, ratchet 2-80, bit Q

The mechanism is the classic random booster one: same box on the outside, variable contents on the inside, no visible indication of which blade you’ll get.

The odds (and what we don’t know)

Takara Tomy does not publish the print ratios of the 5 blades in this box. There is no official percentage, and anyone selling you one as a certain figure is making a number up. If you want a reference figure just to get a rough idea, assuming an even split across the 5 blades the math would be about 1 chance in 5 — but that is an assumption, not a fact, and Takara Tomy could be printing different quotas for each one.

On the competitive value of the 5 blades, the picture is lopsided: we only have solid data on Cobalt Dragoon. On Shark Edge, Mammoth Tusk, Hells Scythe and Dran Buster we have no meaningful data right now — we don’t know how they perform in tournaments, and there’s no point inventing it. If your goal is one of these four, you’re buying blind on two levels: you don’t know whether you’ll get it, and we can’t tell you whether it’s worth having when you do.

Vol. 9 is, at the time of writing, the most recent Random Booster we have data on: no Vol. 10 has shown up yet, but that is no guarantee that a more recent one doesn’t exist by the time you read this guide.

If you’re after Cobalt Dragoon

Here the data is there, and it’s good. In the Cobalt Dragoon 5-60 Elevate build — note, a different build from this booster’s stock ratchet/bit, which is 9-80F — the blade scores 8.68/10 and is #3 in the entire all-time WBO ranking, with 818 points and 717 wins according to that ranking. It’s a “left-spin stealer”: it steals spin through erosion from opposite rotation, a mechanism that makes it particularly nasty against opponents spinning the other way. It is also the only blade that reliably beats Wizard Rod 1-60 Hexa, the absolute #1 combo, in pure stamina. And it’s not a static figure: it went from 8 to 24 placements in August 2026, nearly tripling its presence in the results.

But one point needs to be made clear right away: if you open this booster and find Cobalt Dragoon, you don’t automatically have the combo that wins tournaments. The blade comes with ratchet 9-80 and bit F, while the build that performs is 5-60 Elevate. Winning the booster lottery is only the first step: afterwards you have to get ratchet 5-60 and bit Elevate separately, and they are not included here.

Random booster versus buying direct: honestly

The most useful comparison is with a set like UX-03, which always and only contains the Wizard Rod blade — no surprises, no variables. If you buy UX-03, you know exactly what comes in the box. If you buy this Random Booster Vol. 9, you’re buying a lottery ticket on 5 possible outcomes, only one of which (Cobalt Dragoon) has data that justifies any competitive interest, and which still requires an additional investment in parts to be competitive.

If your specific goal is Cobalt Dragoon in a tournament build, this booster is not the direct route: it’s a probabilistic one, with four outcomes out of five leaving you with a blade we have no data at all on for competitive value. If instead the goal is simply to expand your collection or try whatever comes out, the surprise mechanism is exactly the product you’re buying, and it should be judged for what it is: variable contents, not guaranteed, with no control over the outcome.
